Expat Life - What Foods Do You Miss?

http://wemeantwell.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/question-mark.jpg

Mommy-kins is bring over a few American food items we just don't have in Norway when she arrives in a few weeks, so I'm smiling. Granted-all the items I miss are junk food (and Mexican food-which is of course anything BUT junk....!) such as Cheetos, Cap N' Crunch cereal, proper hot sauce and rice crispy treats but still-I miss them all the same.

What about you? For those of you living outside of your home country, what food items do you miss?

    1. I love a good homemade burger - and I miss proper beef to make them with. Have you tried making them at home?

    1. Whoa-that's a long list! :-) But I understand - some things are just not the same. I LOVE Kvikk lunsj and brunost! If I ever leave Norway, I'll certainly ask for "care packages" with those two items.

  3. You see, the sad thing is this: for the past 5 years we've missed Cholula hot sauce. We settled on Encona "West Indian" hot sauce instead. Then we got home to Cholula ... and discovered that we really missed Encona. It turns out that Encona is actually a UK brand, so we'll have to be having that shipped to Puerto Rico (where we'll be landing tomorrow). Le sigh.

    1. Good luck in your new country David! You've been following my food adventures for a long time and I hope to follow yours one day too (i.e. when you start your own blog - hint hint!). Cholula hot sauce is available in Norway as is the Encona sauce. I keep both stocked in my kitchen - not sure I would have made it here with out them. Hot sauce = the antidote for long, dark winters!

    2. When I start my own blog? Umm ... you mean like the Hobbits Abroad blog, which has been running for at least 5 years? ;)

We've given up on Puerto Rico, though - just can't do it and live like we want to. So, it's back to California for awhile, at least.

    3. Oh sorry David! It's been a while since I had a peak and I spaced when I wrote the comment! Forgive me :-/ So no PR for you and your wife? Norway is always an option too, or is it straight away back to Cali?

    4. We're back in Cali right now, regrouping to figure out where to go from here. Probably staying in the West for awhile - we need to figure out consolidation of student loans, earn some cash, and be stable for awhile.

Norway IS an option, as is Iceland. They're a few years out, though, I think. We're definitely not giving up on living abroad, but are a bit worn out with moving from place to place for awhile.

    5. It can be tough to get your footing in a new country but I think you'll be just fine. Good luck in your journey.

  4. American in Oslo here, missing Wheat Thins, Cheetos, Cheese Nips (notice a pattern?), Mexican food, grits, thick-cut bacon, italian sausage, Jimmy Dean's Sage Sausage, Yazoo Pale Ale, kosher salt (though I just found some here yesterday!), Tillamook or other good sharp cheddar cheese, pepperoni (for some reason all the pepperonis here don't taste quite right to me), crookneck squash, pork shoulder or boston butt for making bbq (the pork here just doesn't seem to have the flavor needed), Tostitos, black-eyed peas, Martha White corn meal, bread 'n butter pickles, and of course a host of other things that might be available here but are out of the question price-wise.

    1. I miss Cheetos too! I can't imagine that fake cheese is good for us but I miss it all the same. You can get grits here, but you have to look. I usually buy mine in the "ethnic" markets and get the coarsely ground stuff from a company called TFS. Not exactly the same but very close.

Black eyed peas are sold in most of the Turkish shops, so have a look for them next time you pop into one :-) The cheddar here does leave something to be desired though!
